Shawn Kenny: So a bunch of skimmers from the area like your style, including myself, so where’d you come up with it? or what are your inspirations?

Harley Nelson: I’m stoked to hear that! I picked up style pointers from skateboarding, before I even really started skimming. Watching and listening to Kenny Anderson, Kenny Hughes, and Brian Anderson talk about style, and what “looks good”, really influenced me. When I started skimming, my early inspirations were Chris Henderson, Jeff Gomez, and Miles Grobman. My style really developed from watching footage of myself skim, paying close attention to details, remembering “that looks like that” or “don’t do that” and making minor adjustments. I’m really just a big copy cat. If someone does a maneuver, that I think looks awesome, Ill try to replicate it, and put my own spin on it.

SK: Do you prefer FS or BS?

HN: OTB, all day
SK: What is your idea of perfect skim?

HN: Consistently, random, perfect shaped waves, ranging from super-slide-riders, to shore-break-yourself-under-the-lip pounders. Liners, wedges, ramps, warm clean water, sunshine. hot tubs, babes, BBQ, boom box screaming some righteous tunes, and all my friends.
SK: Favorite place to skim?

HN: Aliso

SK: Are you planning on entering the UST?

HN: As many contests as I can

SK: Should we look forward to a follow up of Sun, Earth, Moon in 2010?

HN: There has been a lot of discussions and ideas, being bounced around. Nothing is 100% for sure. I did just get my hands on a GoPro, so you can expect plenty of silly youtube videos and photos.

SK: Any new music on that boombox of yours?

HN: Nine Inch Nails – Year Zero, The new Slash solo record, and ASG – Win us over, has pretty much been on repeat for the last month.

SK: What kind of board you riding? (size, shape, anything special)

HN: I’m currently riding an Exile medium/small, 5/8 inch thick, Pro shape. Its red, because red is fast. Ive also been cruising, on Exile’s new Dude, Cruise!. Ive been riding the Cruiseship, the larger Dude, Cruise!. Its a blast, too much fun.
SK: Anything else you wanna say? besides, ¡Los Lakers are gonna take it in 2010! hahah
